When I lost my sight and they told me the problem wasn’t my eyes but my brain, my dad started researching for a cure. Eventually he found out about stem cell therapy. We were in the first lock down at that point and we managed to be allowed to travel for the treatment within two days. Stem cells are present in everybody and doctors have found ways to harvest them from healthy placentas after a baby is born. The cells are administered intravenously via a drip. I am amazed at what stem cells can do, and find it outrageous that the treatment has been banned all around the world which leads to a heafty price tag of 30k for each go! Such an injustice that this treatment isn’t being rolled out for free.
My own journey with stem cells has been amazing, I travelled to Munich for my first treatment before it was made illegal there. I met Dr T and his team one of the best in the world. I watched Afghanistan with Kate humble eating Thai food while is was hooked unto the drip, it took 3 hours and was completely painless. But then my legs started with the worse pins and needles ever, after being told I would never walk again this was a bit of a shock. And the next thing I knew I was starting to use my legs to stand and eventually walk again.
Stem cells were made illegal in Munich, we asked Dr T where to go for more treatment. He was based in Cyprus now so we travelled over for my second dose. This time was different, my eyes began to see colours like being in a rave 24/7 and at this point I hadn’t seen anything but darkness for 4 years and the rave in my head has continued to this day.
And then Stem cells were made illegal in Cyprus. So the third time we travelled to Netherlands which have been granted a license for 50 years so they can’t keep shutting the research down. I had my treatment and in the weeks after I felt a big difference in my brain, I went from not being able to perform simple tasks to doing a Masters in Criminal Justice. Dr T is now expanding his clinic to the Bahamas and we are just waiting for him to get his license for the next round of stem cells. The Drs who work in this field are very passionate about what they do, many people feel stem cells are unethical but there is scientific proof that it can slow down the effects of cancer, MS, epilepsy, blindness and so many more life altering conditions. Thanks to my Dads research it has changed my life. The controversy surrounding the way they collect the stem cells is out dated, cells are now taken from placentas after the baby has been born. But the legal battle continues because big Pharma don’t fancy a cure all treatment being widely available to us.
